Fast becoming endangered in its native countries in Guatemala/Mexico, Chiranthodendron pentadactylon is a one-of-a-kind evergreen rarity is a tree much prized for its wonderfully bizarre flowers borne from late spring through summer. Both its latin and common names refer to the long "clawy" stamens that protrude from the brilliant scarlet blossom, making it looks amazingly like a devil's hand. Double rows of bright yellow pollen on the back side of each "finger" adds to the sinister touch. Large, olive-green leaves with brownish veins. Hardy from zone 9 onwards. 30 feet tall and wide. Full sun. Well-drained garden soil, drought tolerant when established. Very rare fresh seeds in a newly split pod, harvested 06/2026 and kept now in the fridge. If interested, please buy and plant asap as seeds germinate best if freshest. Note that this item will be available only while the seed aril is still orange indicating freshness. Once the aril has turned dull, it will be pulled off the available list.
