Native to Europe and Northern Asia, Inula helenium is a robust, upright perennial that grows easily and is generally pest and disease free. In the Asteraceae (sunflower) family, it forms a rosette of long, narrowly elliptic leaves. Impressive blooms in summer, the daisy-like blossoms with narrow rays and a dark center are magnificient vertical accent in the garden. As a medicinal herb, it has a long history wherein the ocotpus-like roots were traditionally used in the treatment of many respiratory-type ailments such as bronchial infection, chronic cough etc. Nowsaday, the rhizomes are used in France and Switzerland as a flavoring for absinthe. Highly adaptable to most soil types. Hardy from zone 3 onwards. Full sun to part shade. 6 feet tall, 3 feet wide. Fresh seeds, harvested 10/2024.
