With blooms looking somewhat like a sunflower and a tree dahlia, this rarely seen evergreen Guatemalan native is actually relatively new to cultivation. Bearing large, tropical looking leaves that resembles the foliage of a flowering maple (Abutilon sp), Rojasianthe superba is quite a handsome and dramatic shrub year round. When it flowers in early spring, it becomes even more dramatic. The white scented flowers, each with an olive-green patch surrounding a dense area of stamens in the center, are borne in profusion. Each daisy-like bloom starts off facing sideway, but gradually nod and face downwards as seeds start to form. Eventually all the petals age, leaving behind a bristly seed pod that is a menace to touch, :-). Hardy from zone 9 onwards. 10 feet tall, 6 feet wide but can be pruned to be much smaller in a pot. Part shade. Rich, moist, well-drained soil. Very rare but easy-to-germinate fresh seeds, harvested 05/2025.
