If it weren't for this extremely rare and endangered plant, most folks would never have heard of the island of Fogo. This small volcanic land is off the coast of West Africa, part of the Cape Verde archipelago and the only place on earth where Echium vulcanorum can be found naturally growing. Much devastated by feral goats, agriculture and invasive species, this spectacular shrub is fortunately, not hard to grow in gardens with Mediterranean-climate. Clothes handsomely in leathery, silver-green foliage year-round, this woody perennial is similar to its cousin E. candicans in terms of growth habit and overall appearance. It can bloom throughout the year, with large conical inflorescences of white, funnel-shaped flowers each bearing an ethereal-looking icy-blue throat. Much beloved by bees. No hardiness zone, info, sorry. 6 feet tall and wide. Full sun, very well-drained garden soils. Exclusive, fresh seeds, harvested 06/2025.
