Gambelia/Galvezia speciosa, 15 seeds
Yet another perennial plant that the hummers in my yard cannot do without. Native to Channel Island and Guadalupe Island off Southern California, Gambelia speciosa (formerly known as Galvezia speciosa) is a wonderful evergreen bush that can be used as a groundcover in both full sun and part shade, forming a dense mound with arching stems and glossy foliage. Blooming in late spring through fall, it produces tubular, bright-red flowers that are flared at the lip, resembling those of snapdragon. Very attractive to hummingbirds. Drought-tolerant when grown in shade. Hardy from zone 9 onwards. Full sun to part shade. 3 feet tall, 4 feet wide. Well-drained soil but tolerant of clay. Usually available only in plants form. Hard-to-find fresh seeds, harvested 08/2024.
