Salvia holwayi, 5 seeds
This truly remarkable, autumn-through-winter-blooming tender perennial is regarded by many Guatemalans to be among their most attractive native plants. Given some shade with good well-drained soil, Salvia holwayi will grow profusely into large verdant backdrop for many other companions or be used to cover up an ugly fence. Or with hard pruning and a little imagination, it can be grown in a huge hanging basket where its lax, wine-infused stems can trail down gracefully. Many inflorescences are produced along each floppy branch, and these are soon covered with closely-spaced, cardinal-red flowers which usually all open at the same time, creating a "field" of nectar much appreciated by hummingbirds at the time of year when little food is available elsewhere. Yellowish-green, triangular shaped leaves. Hardy from zone 9 onwards. 8 feet tall, 4 feet wide. Part shade. Rich, well-drained soils. Exclusive seeds, harvested 06/2016.
