Hesperaloe parviflora, 20 seeds
What a wonderful drought-tolerant native! The Red Yucca is an outstanding plant with arching, linear, semi-succulent leaves. A member of the Agave family, it is a characteristic, clump-forming perennial but growing only to 2 to 3 feet tall, making it easy to grow in containers as well as front of borders. Blooming is in mid-summer with many tall stout red stems carrying bright coral, bell-shaped flowers with golden yellow throat. Long lasting and a hummingbirds favorite. Though naturally occuring in gravelly limestone soils with fast drainage and rocky slopes, Hesperaloe parviflora is adaptable to most garden soils as long as it doesn't stay waterlogged. Heat-loving but surprisingly cold-tolerant, this is one tough cookie that can be neglected and will still deliver a lot of enjoyment. Hardy from zone 5 onwards. Full sun. Any garden soil. Do not overwater. Fresh seeds, harvested 02/2018.
