Wisterias are vigorous, twining vines with wide landscape usage. These are the Vines of the Great Estates and Grand Gardens. Breathtaking plantings can be found in Kykuit (New York), Longwood Gardens (Philadelphia) and Filoli (California). Elegant, large, cascading racemes are borne in the spring. Each flower is pea-like and very fragrant. The Blue/Purple Wisteria has the earliest blooms from early spring. These photos, in fact, was taken in early March! Its green, compound leaves are shed during autumn to winter, and then the ornamental, elongated bean-like seed pods takes center stage till they explode with a remarkable force! Hardy from zone 5 onwards. 30 feet or more tall but can be kept small by pruning. For a small garden, train it into a tree, perhaps in a pot. Full sun for sensational blooms. Any soil type, and in fact, flowers better when not fertilized and kept moderately moist. Easy-to-germinate seeds, harvested 02/2018.
