An heirloom variety grown by Thomas Jefferson at his Monticello estate, this plant also goes by a number of other names such as 'The Watchman', 'Night Watchman' and 'Sereno'. Highly sought after by pioneers during colonial times because it is extremely useful for dyeing and medicinal purposes, in addition to being extremely ornamental. Biennnial that will flower first year from seeds if started early enough, this hollyhock bears towers of edible, black, satiny, cup-shaped flowers making a very majestic display from early summer to frost. Hardy from zone 3 onwards. Full sun. 7 feet tall, 2 feet wide. Well-drained soil. Drought-tolerant once established, but performs better with ample watering. Fresh seeds, harvested 06/2025.
