Native to the eastern and southwestern US, Butterflyweed (Asclepias speciosa) is the 2017 Perennial Plant Association's Plant Of The Year. A nectar plant for many butterflies, it has a double function as the host plant for the caterpillars of the Monarch butterfly. Easily grown from seeds, this is a tuberous bushy and upright plant, dormant in winter and emerging late spring to bloom in summer. Flowers are arranged in flat-topped clusters and are composed of many showy, small star-shaped florets in shades of yellowish-orange to orange. A repeat bloomer if cut back, it has lance-shaped bright green foliage. Hardy from zone 3 onwards. 3 feet tall and wide. Full sun. Adaptable to soil types. Drought-tolerant once established. Very fresh seeds, harvested 11/2025.
