Tecoma/Tecomaria capensis, 20 seeds
Though commonly called Cape Honeysuckle, this perennial plant does not belong to the Lonicera species. Rarely offered in seed form, it is a South African native that has become a landscaper's delight in warmer zones such as California and Texas. Heat-tolerant, pest-resistant and drought-tolerant once established, it forms an evergreen (deciduous in cooler zones) woody vine-like shrub that is almost always in bloom. The gorgeous clusters of brilliant, reddish-orange tubular flowers are not only extremely eye-catching, but also very attractive to hummingbirds and butterflies. Easily pruned into a hedge or free-standing tree, many bonsai enthusiasts are also turning this into a bonsai subject. Opposite, pinnately compound leaves. Hardy from zone 8 upwards. 6 feet tall, 5 feet wide (can be kept smaller by heavy pruning). Full sun. Well-drained soil. Drought-tolerant. Hard-to-find fresh seeds, harvested 03/2017.
