Schizostylis coccinea 'Red', 35 seeds
Schizostylis coccinea is a rarely grown South African rhizomatous perennial that blooms from late summer till frost. One of the very best and easy to provide colors at a time when many summer bloomers are just about done flowering, this lily-like plant is used by many advanced gardeners to extend the season. With its numerous, cheerful, satiny, deliciously reddish apricot 2" wide, star-shaped beauties floating above neat clumps of thin leaves, it quickly adds a sparklingly fresh look to a shabby border, and can even be used in cut flower bouquets for Thanksgiving (and sometimes for Christmas too). Hardy from zone 6 onwards. 3 feet tall, 1 feet wide. Full sun to part shade. Any garden soil. Rich, moist soil. Tolerant of over-watering. Usually available as bulbs. Hard-to-find seeds, harvested 12/2023.
