Nicotiana sylvestris, 35 seeds
Native to Argentina, this relative of the Tobacco plant (Nicotiana tabacum) is a massive crazy giant, not to be confused with the commonly seen garden hybrids. Easy to grow and will flower first year from seeds, it makes a very definite and dramatic statement with its large, coarse, slightly-sticky, bright-green oval leaves. Come summer, it blooms. Its tall, upright stems are topped with drooping clusters of long, pendulous, white tubular flowers, which flare to five-pointed stars at the end. These are intensely fragrant, especially in the evening. If you have a white/fragrant/moon garden, this is an indispensable plant. Though commonly called Woodland Tobacco and indeed growing taller and more imposing in part shade, it is also tolerant of full sun as long as the soil is kept moist. Hardy from zone 9 onwards. 6 feet tall, 3 feet wide. Full sun to part shade. Rich, well-drained soil. Regular water. Fresh seeds, harvested 07/2024.
