Always known as Phaseolus giganteus to us (and sometimes Vigna caracalla to others), a buyer has recently informed us that this is now classified as Sigmoidotropis speciosa. Regardless of its confusing botanical name, the Purple Snail Vine is a gorgeous, vigorous, perennial twiner that blooms first year from seeds. From summer through fall, it bears swirly flowers that look like snails. All aspects of the blooms are interesting looking -- bud looks like snail shells, frontal view with a cute hook and even when flipped over, the white back view of it looks somewhat like a butterfly. Great curiosity garden item that attract lots of passerbys. Hardy from zone 9 onwards. Full sun to part shade. Any well-drained garden soil. Average water. Fresh hard-to-find seeds, harvested 10/2024.
