Many shade gardeners limit themselves to light-color flowers so that the shady area will look brighter. However, once a tall, dark plant such as this is added, a touch of elegance, royalty and structure is immediately introduced. This flowering maple is a perennial with maple-shaped leaves that is really not a maple at all. Abutilon hybridum is a shrub that blooms from early spring through summer, but will also occasionally flowers through the winter. Each bell-shaped orange flower of this variety is pendulous, and fairly flaring. Distinctive with prominent veins throughout the corolla. Hardy from zone 8 onwards. 6 feet tall and wide. Filtered sun. Rich, evenly moist soil. Fresh seeds, harvested 08/2022.
