Native to South Africa but was in famous European gardens more than 200 years ago, Hermannia hyssopifolia was exported in the very early days of Cape botanical exploration but nowsaday rarely seen. A low growing upright shrub with small oblong aromatic leaves, this plant blooms in early spring. The lemon-yellow flowers are pretty fascinating -- with 5 small petals attached at the mouth in a neat tight circle and framed by a swollen maroon calyx, giving the appearance of an inflated hairy balloon. 4 feet tall and wide. Full sun to part shade. Very well-drained soil. Hard-to-find, fresh seeds, harvested 11/2024.
