Impatiens gomphophylla, 4 seeds
With a rather wide geographic range from the Democratic Republic of Congo to Tanzania to Zambia and Malawi, this African native is however still very hard-to-find elsewhere. Rarely seen and offered, Impatiens gomphophylla grows into a tall upright, weakly branched perennial that is evergreen here in California, but might be deciduous elsewhere. Its flower's shape and size is very similar to that of the equally rare Impatiens salpinx, but the color is quite exquisite, being bicolored, reddish-peach hood with yellow lower petals. Hardy from zone 7 onwards. 4 feet tall, 2 feet wide. Part shade. Rich, moist but well-drained soil. Regular watering. Usually available only in plants/cuttings form. Exclusive, fresh seeds, harvested 10/2014.
