Salvia forskaohlei, 10 seeds
Before I ever found out that the common name of this plant is Balkan Sage, I have been calling it the Standing Penguin Sage/Swan Sage as each flower looks like a cute standing penguin in the frontal/side view respectively, :-). This beautiful herbaceous perennial blooms first year from seed, starting from late spring through frost. The whorls of flowers are few in number and widely spaced, but make quite show because the the purple, two-lipped flowers are extremely gorgeous. Each penguin bloom has a white 'stomach' speckled with purple -- beeline that tracks the most direct path to the nectar and pollen for insects. Large basal clump of fuzzy, parsley-green leaves make Salvia forskaohlei of the few Sage species suitable for shade conditions. Hardy from zone 6 onwards. 3 feet tall, 2 feet wide. Part shade. Well-drained, rich soil. Moderate water. Hard-to-find seeds, harvested 09/2017.
Our website for actively-growing plants and cuttings (eclecticplants.ecrater.com) is now re-opened starting 6/2/2014. Cuttings of some Salvia species are available there.
