Begonia boliviensis, 25 seeds
This rarely seen tuberous Bolivian is a wonderful plant for the container. Very hardy but will go dormant in winter in most of the cooler zones, it emerges in mid summer with dark green, serrated, angel-wing-like leaves on tall arching stems. Then flower buds develop at the end of each stem and these open up into beautifully delicate-looking, bright reddish-orange, bell-shaped, dangling blooms that seem to dance with the hummingbirds that come to feed. Even the oddly-shaped seedpods are quite a delight! On offer here is the straight species, sometimes sold in the trade with the cultivar name 'Bonfire'. There are buyers who indicated to us that they are the same and there are buyers who tell us otherwise. Hardy from zone 7 onwards. 2 feet tall and wide. Part shade. Regular water. Rich, slightly acidic soil. High humidity. Hard-to-find, fresh seeds, harvested 08/2016.
