Cuphea micropetala, 20 seeds
Hailing from Mexico and quite the tireless bloomer, this is among the best perennials for hummingbirds and butterflies. Evergreen with opposite, narrow leaves that contrast beautifully with the abundantly produced blooms on the branching tips of the stems. The tubular flowers of Cuphea micropetala are absolutely gorgeous, opening up bright yellow but as they edge, the base of each bloom turns orange-red before the entire flower takes on that color. The end result is a stunning bush full of flowering stalks of two-toned "firecrackers" or "candy corn", depending on your imagination. Hardy from zone 8 onwards. 3 feet tall and wide. Full sun to part shade. Well-drained soil. Moderate watering. Usually available only in plant forms. Fresh seeds, harvested 09/2016 & 12/2016.
Our website for actively-growing plants and cuttings (eclecticplants.ecrater.com) is now re-opened starting 6/2/2014. Cuttings of some Cuphea species are available there.
