Cantua buxifolia 'Red', 5 seeds
When this sacred flower of the Incas starts blooming, it is time to take out the camera and shoot shoot shoot! An exceptionally beautiful and rare perennial shrub found usually only in collectors' gardens, Cantua buxifolia is an amazing Andean plant that has the grace and elegance of Fuchsias and the exuberance of Brugmansias/Iochromas, although it is neither and its seeds are much easier to germinate than the other genus. For several weeks in spring, large, pendant, tubular, glowing pinkish-red flowers with flaring tips elegantly dangle from long arching stems lined with oval, toothed leaves. The profusion of the blooms can only be described in one word "Breathtaking!". Generally evergreen here in California, but could be deciduous in cooler climate. Very often confused with the hybrid "Hot Pants" which has orangy-tube. Hardy from zone 9b onwards. 7 feet tall, 4 feet wide. Rich, well-drained soil. Part shade. Usually available only as plants or cuttings. Fresh, exclusive seeds, harvested 09/2017 - 10/2017.
