Clematis armandii, 20 seeds
Perhaps not as well known as the deciduous hybrid Clematis varieties but is fast gaining popularity, this evergreen vine from China is every bit just as spectacular, whether in bloom or not. An enthusiatic and rugged climber that is able to scramble through almost anything, Clematis armandii has glossy, compound leaves that is leathery in texture, with prominent veins. Dark green when old but brilliant dark red when young, this foliage makes it one of the most handsome coverage for trellises/arbors. In late winter, it starts to bloom and the whole plant just becomes a mass of white, deliciously scented, star-shaped flowers borne in clusters at the end of the branches. The seed pods that follow is equally dramatic with each seed carrying a long curly tail. Hardy from zone 8 onwards. 20 feet tall. Full sun to part shade. Rich, well-drained garden soil. Regular watering when young but drought-tolerant when established. Usually available as plants only. Hard-to-find seeds, harvested 09/2016. Long germination time, please make sure you research the web and are up-to-the-task before buying.
