Streptosolen jamesonii, 15 seeds
From South America comes this rarely seen yet easy-to-grow, evergreen, fast and vigorous tropical. The Marmalade Bush, also called Fire Bush or Orange Browallia is a wonderful perennial almost always in bloom here in California. An extremely versatile ornamental that can be grown as a bush/tree in the ground or trained to trail down from a hanging basket/spill down a retaining wall. The gorgeous flowers, however, are its most attractive feature. These 5-petaled beauties literally smother the plant, starting off yellow, and then gradually age to orange and orangy-red. One can usually find all three colors at any one point in time, sorta like the Yesterday, Today & Tomorrow plant. This fluctuating series of colors give Streptosolen jamesonii an added dimension besides cheerfulness and abundance. A favorite of hummingbirds as well. Dark green, glossy, textured leaves. Hardy from zone 9 onwards. 6 feet tall and wide. Full sun. Well-drained soil. Drought-tolerant once established. Hard-to-find fresh seeds, harvested 07/2017.
Our website for actively-growing plants and cuttings (eclecticplants.ecrater.com) is now re-opened starting 6/2/2014. Cuttings of this species are available there.
