Echium wildpretii, 20 seeds
Winner the prestigious Award Of Garden Merit by the Royal Horticultural Society, this biennial from the Canary Islands is one of the most towering and impressive plant in the garden. In its first year, Echium wildpretti is a neat clump of narrow, silvery-gray foliage. But come spring of the next year, it suddenly shoots up a huge, tall, thick, tapered conical spike full of peachy pink flowers. Abuzzed with bees at that time, and extremely striking and breathtaking. Full sun. Hardy from zone 9 onwards. 6 feet tall, 3 feet wide. Drought-tolerant. Well-drained, sandy soil. Tolerant of poor nutrient soil and seaside salt sprays. To be differentiated with E. pinninana which has the same common name, this one doesn't form a trunk. Hard-to-find but fresh, easy-to-germinate seeds, harvested 06/2016.
Our website for actively-growing plants and cuttings (eclecticplants.ecrater.com) is now re-opened starting 6/2/2014. Plants of some Echium species are available there.
