Ugni molinae, 20 seeds
The Chilean Guava is a lovely evergreen ornamental from Chile, not well-known but gaining popularity thanks to its extremely tasty fruits. Maturing into a roundish shrub with small, glossy, dark-green, fragrant leaves that are tinged red when young, Ugni molinae, also known variously as Myrtus ugni and Eugenia ugni, is a plant easily trained into a hedge or grown as a specimen. In spring, it bears many white tinged-pink, bell-shaped flowers which get pollinated to become blueberry-sized fruits. These lightly-sweet berries are well-beloved by all who have ever tasted it, including Queen Victoria. They have a very distinct flavor, somewhat peppery, somewhat strawberry-like, somewhat candy-corn like, absolutely delicious! Hardy from zone 8 onwards. 8 feet tall and wide. Full sun to light shade. Average water. Very hard-to-find fresh seeds, harvested 09/2014 & 11/2014.
Our website for actively-growing plants and cuttings (eclecticplants.ecrater.com) is now re-opened starting 6/2/2014.
