Impatiens capensis, 5 seeds
This native is an extremely entertaining plant with gorgeously spotted flowers. An annual with somewhat fragile stems, the spotted Jewelweed grows into a luxurious patch with many branches of green, broadly serrated leaves. From summer onwards, it starts to bear its delightfully shaped, orange-spotted, exotic-looking flowers each bearing a curved long spur. Bloom period is shortest 2 months and longest, almost till frost here in California. Then, it attracts hummingbirds, long-tongued bees and many other small insects. When its seed pods are ripe, they burst open readily when slightly touched, hence sending the seeds flying! In fact, one of the common names of Impatiens capensis is "Touch-Me-Not", alluding to the exploding nature of the fruit capsule. Cure for Poison Ivy. 3 feet tall, 2 feet wide. Part shade. Rich moist soil. Regular water. Hard-to-find fresh seeds, harvested 09/2016.
Our website for actively-growing plants and cuttings (eclecticplants.ecrater.com) is now re-opened starting 6/2/2014. Cuttings of some Impatiens species are available there.
