Bocconia arborea, 10 seeds
Belonging to the Papaveraceae family, Bocconia arborea may be thought of as a perennial Tree Poppy but is totally different and very rarely seen and cultivated. Hailing from Central and South America, it is an evergreen, vigorous shrub here in California (may be deciduous in cooler regions) handsomely clothed in strikingly-shaped, pinanately-lobed green foliage. The masses of tiny flowers are not too memorable (in my opinion), but because these are borne in very large, branched racemes, the powdery-purplish-blue fruiting capsules that formed upon pollination then become a very beautiful "chandeliers". The red rim oval-shaped pods take their own sweet time to ripen in about 5 months, turning from purple to yellow and then brown, giving the gardener plenty of time to enjoy their unique, architectural shapes and texture. And then they burst open, not totally but each leaving behind a "hoop" from which a red-and-black seed "crawls" out, looking just like a ladybug! What a surprise! :-) No zone hardiness info, sorry. 12 feet tall, 8 feet wide but can be kept much smaller by pruning. Full sun. Rich, moist soil. Very rare, exclusive seeds, harvested 09/2016.
