Salvia confertiflora, 5 seeds
Native to Brazil, here is another rare Sage that is not often seen in nurseries, nor listed in catalogs. Salvia confertiflora is an autumn blooming perennial that will quickly become a huge clump, often time so laden with leaves and inflorescences that it needs to be protected from strong winds. The flowering spikes are long, easily a foot or more and a stalk that is 2 feet in length is sometimes produced. These are covered with hairs, giving the impression of velvet, extremely sumptuous. Each flower is small, but in a hard-to-find color in the Salvia world -- orange! And highlighted by red calyx. Favorites of hummingbirds as well. Hardy from zone 9 upwards. 6 feet tall and wide. Full sun. Well-drained soils. Regular water. Large textured leaves. Very rare, fresh seeds, harvested 08/2017.
Our website for actively-growing plants and cuttings (eclecticplants.ecrater.com) is now re-opened starting 6/2/2014. Cuttings of some Salvia species are available there.
