Tibouchina heteromalla, 25 seeds
The Princess Flower (Tibouchina urvillea) is one of the most impressive shrubs. A very vigorous Brazilian tropical that is handsome in and out of bloom, it steals the show wherever it is used. The simple leaves are large, ovate, green and often tinged with red. Velvety and somewhat coarse in appearance, they grab your attention and add texture and interest to any area. When the plant blooms in summer (and sporadically throughout the year), it is covered with clusters of huge, royal purple flowers at the end of the branches. On offer here is a rarely seen semi-deciduous species, it is a very "hairy" plant compared to T. urvillea. Correspondingly, all parts are softer to the touch. Also, unlike T. urvillea, it is deciduous in very cold winter but will return in subsequent spring. Hardy from zone 9 onwards. 7 feet tall and wide. Full sun. Heat tolerant. Rich, well-drained soil. Exclusive fresh seeds, harvested 08/2017.
