Fuchsia splendens, 20 seeds
Splendid indeed! This rare and beautiful deciduous shrub comes from Central America and is a free bloomer from mid summer onwards. Its flowers each has bright red tube with green sepals, and interestingly, there is a compression/flattening of the floral tube near the base giving it unusual shape. So though the blooms are simple compared to many of the fancier hybrids, they are at the same time intriguing and exceptional. The long edible berries that formed after pollination have a somewhat lemony-like flavor, highly rated by many as among the best-tasting Fuchsia fruits. Cordate leaves. Hardy from zone 9 upwards. 10 feet tall, 5 feet wide in its natuaral habitat but rarely reach this proportion in cultivation. Light shade. Moist, rich soil. Hard-to-find fresh seeds, harvested 03/2014.
