Xeronema callistemon, 20 seeds
One of the best horticultural subjects from New Zealand, the Poor Knights Lily hails from a protected reserve with landing prohibition, making it an extremely hard-to-find species elsewhere. Xeronema callistemon is unfortunately, a challenging plant and advisable mainly for collectors (in my opinion). Slow growing when young, it forms a fan of smooth green sword-like blades of leaves. For gardeners with interest in foliage, it can be grown as a handsome, structural plant in a container. When mature, it blooms in late spring. Vertical stalks arise from the base of the clump, and then gently bend to display the bright red, bottle-brush-like flowers at the tip. Hardy from zone 10 onwards. 3 feet tall, 6 feet wide. Full sun in cool-summer areas to part shade elsewhere. Very well-drained soil. Fresh exclusive seeds, harvested 08/2017.
Our website for actively-growing plants and cuttings (eclecticplants.ecrater.com) is now re-opened starting 6/2/2014.
