Brugmansia arborea, 10 seeds
Not well known and possibly the hardest to find in the nursery trade (most available white Brugmansias are B. suaveolens or B. versicolor or hybrids incorrectly sold as this), this is the true wild species Brugmansia arborea native to high elevation of the Andes. A vigorous grower that will quickly attain the size of a small tree, it blooms most of the year but heaviest during the cooler months. Exceptionally fragrant (a little like the lemony scent of Night Blooming Jasmine Cestrum nocturnum), pendulent, flaring white trumpets that are attractive to moths. Of all the Brugs species, this is the one with the shortest tube but each bloom bears the most exquisitely-formed curls. Looking face on at the flower, it has the shape of a 5-point star. One of the few Brugs that are self-fertile and does not need a pollen donor to set fruit. This cool-growing species can be hybridized with the equivalently rare B. sanguineum and B. vulcanicola. Wonderful, large, FELTY tropical evergreen foliage. Hardy from zone 8b onwards. Full sun to part shade. 10 feet tall, 6 feet wide. Rich, well-drained soil. Moderate watering, more drought-tolerant than other Brugs. Fresh exclusive seeds, harvested 08/2016.
