Bomarea sp 'Red Sunset', 7 seeds
Here is yet another rarely offered twining vine from Ecuador. The exact species name of this Bomarea is not known, the 'Red Sunset' is to be differentiated from the sometimes deciduous one that many folks have been calling 'Orange Sunset' by having blooms that are not speckled. This dramatic, gorgeous and vigorous tropical is related to the Alstroemerias, both its flowers and leaves demonstrate this close relationship. Its beautiful blossoms are produced in a dense umbel at the end of the growing shoots. Each umbel can be composed of as many as 40 flowers if well grown, with each bell-shaped bloom being scarlet red for the outer petals and reddish-orange for the inner petals. This particular species is evergreen year-round here in California, and blooms in flushes throughout the year, even in winter. Upon pollination, a small "shower-head"-like pod is formed and that ripens to reveal bright scarlet seeds. Hardy from zone 9 onwards. 10 feet tall. Light shade. Rich, well-drained soil. Exclusive, fresh seeds, harvested 09/2015.
