Vitex lucens, 4 berries/seeds
Almost everyone is familiar with the Chaste Tree (Vitex agnus-castus) but most folks in the US have not heard of its cousin from New Zealand. Also known as Puriri, Vitex lucens is a long-lived evergreen timber tree with very strong, dense and durable, reddish-brown heartwood. Excellent for urban areas where it can be planted right against the sidewalk since it doesn't easily/break the cement, it is however, a valuable food source for wildlife in its native country, especially being an important host plant for the giant, glowing green Puriri/Ghost Moth. Blooms almost year-round but heaviest in winter. The tubular exotic-looking flowers are wine-red, a little similar in shape to those of the snapdragon. Upon pollination, blue-berry-size fruits are formed, maturing to a cherry red color. Each fruit contains only one seed, which is uniquely shaped as shown in one of these pictures. Smooth glossy, palmate leaves. Hardy from zone 9 onwards. 40 feet tall and wide. Full sun to Part shade. Thanks to Dean R of Australia for helping to identify this species! Fresh, exclusive seeds, harvested 08/2017.
